Sparkly Unicorn
by Rubin Starset on December 7, 2009 - 3:31 pm, under Burning Man 2009
We have something special for you this week. A Unicorn interviewing a Unicorn. We ran into Andrew and knew there could only be one. Initially there was a fierce sparkle battle, but then friendship was gained thanks to a flask.
‣ So, ah, what's your ah, what's your name?
My name is Andrew.
‣ Andrew! And, ah, can you tell me a little bit about your outfit?
It's, ah, sparkly. It's, ah, the fitting of my myth.
‣ Your myth?
My myth.
(laughter)
‣ Tell me about the myth.
The ah, the myth, of, I don't know, the unique quality, the ephemeral. The... the... ah, I don't know. Ask me a better question!
‣ What made you decide to wear this today?
What made you decide to wear what you're wearing today? We seem to be wearing similar objects.
‣ Well, I, I woke up, or no I should say I got out of my tent at about 8pm, scratched my ass and decided that I, I wanted to have a giant horn on my head.
Mmm mmm.
‣ And, ah, with big perky ears and something people could pet. Would you feel that that coincides with what you got? You've got more flash, here. You've got sparklies.
I haven't been pet too much, that's true. I would not say that I was anticipating petting. And yet, and yet, now that you mention it, not a bad idea. Should seek petting.
‣ Yeah just go out and be like, "Hey ladies, do you like just one horn?" And, it works, it works pretty well, it works pretty well.
Good, good, good.
‣ Any final thoughts about what you're wearing? You've also got a pretty sparkly shirt, too.
You know, ah, no- it's all, it's all essential. That's basically the gist.
‣ Cheers!
Cheers!
And thus ends our epic Unicorn face off. All observers were left with rainbow rum in their hearts and glitter all over their faces.

T-Rex
by Rubin Starset on November 29, 2009 - 11:17 pm, under Burning Man 2009
What strange time machine brought this monster back? Something about a grown man in a child's cute dinosaur costume made us flock to him like moths to a road flair.
‣ Can you explain what you are wearing?
So I'm wearing a child's dinosaur costume. But, this actually has some history to it, this is, this costume goes back about 5 years now, and it's, ah, it's, um... I earned the nickname T-Rex at one point during a trip to Mardi Gras. And, basically I went on this rampage after getting really drunk and went to Sonic Burger and I was like running up on people's tables and eating their food and generally just rampaging just, just, grabbing people and going AAARRRGH! So my friends bought me this T-Rex outfit, and made me wear it when we got back home for a night. And then again I rampaged in the T-Rex outfit, so now it's been a recurring theme, and I am known as T-Rex.
‣ Does the outfit fit you pretty well?
Well you can see that I had to rip out the crotch, the arms only come down to my elbows and knees. So yeah it was only made for a six year old.
Don't be fooled by that innocent smile, he's a carnivorous rampaging beast under all that dust and torn crotch. Be cautious around the one named T-Rex.

The Twin Vikings
by Rubin Starset on November 29, 2009 - 11:16 pm, under Burning Man 2009
This is it, this is what started it all. Was it something they found in an attic? Did they get a good deal at Walmart five minutes before heading up to the playa? Was it a gift from an ancient warrior? We wanted to know why they went with horns, and they told us all.
‣ So why do you guys wear what you wear?
Pete I'll let you start.
‣ What made you pick out the viking horns?
Ah, wow your blowing my mind here. There's something cool about horns. And, uh, every time I've come to Burning Man, the people with the horns stand out. And that's kind of like, part of the whole idea here as far as I can tell, it's like, how can I out do everyone else to get noticed and like, not in like, a competitive way, but you know, it's all in fun. Yeah, inspiring. Like, I see people- we just saw this guy with a bunch of rear view mirrors all over him. And I was like, dude! You are the man, I was so inspired. And he's like, yeah, you know, and I wanted to take some notes from him 'cause clearly he'd put a lot of thought into it and he looked great, you know, he's my inspiration for next year, maybe, who knows?
‣ Are you on the same line here?
Yea I totally am here. Pete's the brains behind a lot of this stuff, and I just go with him. Yeah, he's got a much more artistic and creative mind then I could ever imagine.
‣ Well I see you guys are wearing slightly different horns?
Yeah, a little different. He had the, yeah he had the, yeah he wanted to make some horns out of foam but he ended up sticking with those.
‣ So you guys actually made these?
Oh yeah, oh yeah these are actually cut out of foam, pasted in like four different ways. Those he bought, these he made, yeah. He actually put a lot of work into these.
‣ Have you been wearing them all week?
I just got here tonight.
‣ Do you expect to wear them all week?
Most of the week, some of the week, I got some other deals I'm working on.
‣ Right on.
We were extremely blown away by this intense answer, to the point that we decided this was now a thing. Thanks to the horns, a quest was laid out for us. We wanted more answers like this, more awesome in such a question that started off with a simple Why?
